Your LG dishwasher starts normally, fills with water and begins washing. After several minutes, the remaining time stops changing—or the dishwasher suddenly shuts off.

Sometimes it restarts later. Other times, you must reset the breaker before it will operate again.

Does this mean the main control board has failed?

Possibly.

In our experience, a failing main control board is a common cause when an LG dishwasher stops randomly, freezes during different parts of the cycle or loses operation even though the household power supply is stable.

However, the power connection, door latch, water supply and error-code history should be checked before an expensive board is ordered.

Step 1: Identify the Problem

Common symptoms include:

• The remaining time stops changing.

• The dishwasher pauses after several minutes.

• The control panel becomes unresponsive.

• The machine shuts off randomly during different cycles.

• The dishwasher works again after resetting the breaker.

• The cycle stops without displaying an error.

• The dishwasher operates normally during one load but fails during another.

• Lights flash or buttons respond incorrectly.

• The dishwasher drains or fills but never completes the program.

The time displayed on an LG dishwasher is an estimated remaining time. It may adjust while the machine evaluates the load, fills with water or runs selected options. A short delay does not automatically mean the control board is defective.

The problem is more serious when the timer remains frozen for a long period, the controls stop responding or the dishwasher loses power completely.

Step 2: Check the Dishwasher Safely

Wait and observe the cycle

Allow the dishwasher to continue for approximately 10–15 minutes.

Listen for what it is doing:

• Is water entering?

• Can you hear strong washing action?

• Does it drain?

• Is it completely silent?

• Is the control panel still illuminated?

If the display stays on and the dishwasher is washing, heating or filling, the estimated time may simply be adjusting.

If the display and all lights shut off, check the electrical supply before assuming the control board has failed.

Reset the dishwasher

Turn off the dishwasher’s circuit breaker for approximately five minutes.

Restore power and run a short or normal cycle.

A reset may clear a temporary electronic fault. It will not permanently repair a board with damaged circuits, overheating components or an intermittent relay.

If the dishwasher works after every reset but later shuts off again, the electronic control or power connection requires testing.

Check the breaker and power connection

Confirm that the dishwasher breaker is not loose or partially tripped.

Many dishwashers are permanently connected inside an electrical junction box. A loose wire, overheated connection or damaged power cord can cause intermittent shutdowns.

Stop using the dishwasher if you notice:

• A burning smell

• Heat around the connection

• Discoloured wiring

• Sparking

• A breaker that repeatedly trips

LG manuals require the dishwasher to have a properly grounded electrical connection and state that electrical repair or disassembly should be performed by experienced service personnel.

Inspect the door latch

• A rack or dish preventing the door from closing

• Debris around the latch

• A damaged latch or strike

• A door that moves during operation

• Loose mounting brackets

• An uneven dishwasher installation

Close the door firmly and restart the cycle. Do not slam it.

Check the water supply

If the timer stops while the dishwasher is trying to fill, confirm that the household water valve is fully open.

Inspect the supply hose for kinks. LG notes that cycle advancement can be delayed when the dishwasher is not filling correctly.

Record error codes

Check the display and LG ThinQ app, when available, for stored or active errors.

An error involving filling, draining, heating, leakage or the motor may cause the dishwasher to pause before the main board is condemned. LG provides model-dependent error codes, so record the complete code before resetting the dishwasher.

Step 3: Determine the Likely Solution

If the dishwasher has stable incoming power, the door latch works correctly and no water-supply or drainage problem is found, the main control board becomes a strong suspect.

The main board controls or coordinates components such as:

• Water inlet valve

• Circulation motor

• Drain pump

• Heating system

• Sensors

• User interface

• Cycle timing

A failing board may operate correctly when cold and stop after internal components heat up. This can explain why the dishwasher sometimes completes a cycle and sometimes shuts off randomly.

Before replacing the board, a technician should test:

• Voltage entering the dishwasher

• Junction-box connections

• Door-latch circuit

• Wiring harnesses

• User-interface communication

• Motor and pump operation

• Heater and sensor readings

• Voltage outputs from the main board

If the correct power enters the board but the dishwasher loses control or stops sending power to working components, board replacement may be recommended.

A faulty board does not mean that the tub, racks, pumps and complete dishwasher are finished.

• The racks and tub are not badly damaged.

• The correct control board is available.

A new dishwasher can cost two or three times more after delivery, installation, removal, plumbing and electrical connections are included.

However, the diagnosis must be accurate. A new board will not solve a loose electrical connection, damaged door latch, poor water supply or failing motor.
