Your Miele dishwasher finishes the cycle, but dirty water remains at the bottom.
You may also see an F11 fault, a Drain warning, or a flashing inlet/drain light. Sometimes the dishwasher drains normally, but during the next cycle, the water remains inside again.
Does this mean the dishwasher needs an expensive drain pump or should be replaced?
Usually, no.
On many Miele dishwashers, the problem is caused by a blocked, damaged, or incorrectly installed non-return valve.
The non-return valve prevents dirty drain water from flowing back into the dishwasher after the pump removes it. Food debris, broken glass, labels, bones, and other small objects can interfere with the valve or drain pump.
The Issue: Water Remains Inside the Dishwasher
Common symptoms include:
- Water remains at the bottom after the cycle.
- The dishwasher displays fault code F11.
- The Drain or Inlet/Drain light flashes.
- The dishwasher makes a humming sound but does not drain.
- The dishwasher drains slowly.
- Water returns after the dishwasher finishes draining.
- The dishwasher drains during some cycles but not others.
- Dirty water or unpleasant odours remain inside.
Miele identifies several possible causes of an F11 or no-drain condition, including a blocked drain pump, a dirty or incorrectly positioned non-return valve, and water flowing back into the wash cabinet.
How to Diagnose a Miele Dishwasher That Will Not Drain
Cancel the cycle and listen to the pump
Cancel the current program and start a drain cycle if your model provides that option.
Listen carefully.
If you hear the drain pump humming but little or no water leaves the dishwasher, the pump or non-return valve may be obstructed.
If the pump makes a grinding or rattling noise, there may be broken glass, a small bone, a fruit pit, or another foreign object inside the pump area.
If there is no pump sound, the problem may involve the drain pump motor, wiring, control board, door switch, or electrical supply.
Check the sink and drain hose
Before opening the dishwasher, confirm that the kitchen sink is draining normally.
Inspect the dishwasher drain hose under the sink and behind the appliance when accessible. Make sure it is not:
- Kinked
- Crushed
- Blocked
- Disconnected
- Installed incorrectly
- Clogged where it connects to the sink drain or garbage disposal
If a garbage disposal was recently installed, confirm that the dishwasher drain connection was properly opened.
Clean the dishwasher filters
Turn the dishwasher off and disconnect the electrical power before working inside it.
Remove the lower basket and take out the filter combination at the bottom of the dishwasher.
Clean the filters under running water and remove food, labels, glass, and other debris. The filters must be reinstalled correctly and locked into position. Otherwise, larger debris can enter the circulation or drainage system.
Inspect the non-return valve
If water remains inside, remove as much as possible using a cup, sponge, or small container.
On many Miele dishwasher models, the non-return valve is located underneath the filter assembly.
Press the valve’s retaining catch and carefully lift or tip the valve out, depending on the model.
Clean it under running water and inspect it for:
- Food debris
- Broken glass
- Grease buildup
- A damaged rubber seal
- Cracks
- Warping
- A flap that does not move correctly
Be careful: small pieces of glass can be difficult to see inside the drain-pump area. Miele specifically warns about the risk of injury from hidden glass splinters.
After cleaning, reinstall the valve correctly. It should sit flush, and the retaining catch should engage completely. An incorrectly positioned valve can cause the dishwasher to continue displaying an F11 drain fault.
Check the drain-pump impeller
The drain pump is located underneath the non-return valve or drain-pump cover.
With the dishwasher disconnected from power, inspect the pump carefully for foreign objects. The impeller should be able to move, although some resistance may be normal.
Do not force the impeller or insert a metal tool into the pump.
Newer Miele G 7xxx and some G 5xxx Discovery models may use a drain-pump cover rather than the same non-return-valve design found in many older G 1xxx through G 6xxx machines. Always follow the instructions for the exact model.
The Likely Solution
If debris is preventing the valve from closing, cleaning and reinstalling the non-return valve may solve the problem.
However, replacement may be required when:
- The valve is cracked or warped.
- The rubber seal is worn.
- The internal flap is damaged.
- Water flows back into the dishwasher.
- The valve does not remain correctly seated.
- The problem returns after the valve has been cleaned.
Miele describes the non-return valve as the component that protects against water flowing back into the dishwasher cavity. Different generations use different valves, so the replacement part must be confirmed using the complete model number.
If the valve is in good condition but the dishwasher still does not drain, the technician should test:
- The drain pump
- Drain hose
- Electrical connections
- Pump wiring
- Control-board output
- Drain connection under the sink
A non-return valve should not be replaced without first checking for a blockage and confirming that it is actually damaged.
Technician’s Recommendation: Repair or Replace?
As an appliance technician, I normally recommend repairing a Miele dishwasher with this problem.
Miele dishwashers are premium appliances, and replacing one can cost several times more than cleaning the drainage system or replacing the non-return valve.
Most customers choose the repair when the dishwasher is otherwise in good condition.
Cleaning the valve may be enough when a piece of food, glass, or another foreign object is causing the blockage. However, if the valve is damaged or water repeatedly returns to the dishwasher, replacement is usually the better long-term solution.
Continuing to use a dishwasher that does not drain correctly may cause:
- Unpleasant odours
- Poor washing results
- Dirty water returning to the cabinet
- Additional stress on the drain pump
- Leakage or overflow problems
A technician should also inspect the drain pump while the filter and valve are removed. This can help prevent a second service visit for debris hidden underneath the valve.
Miele Non-Return Valve Repair Price
The final price depends on the exact dishwasher model, valve design, accessibility, and whether the drain pump or hose also requires service.
Typical pricing may include:
- Miele non-return valve: approximately $70–$180
- Professional labour: approximately $220–$280
- Estimated repair total: approximately $290–$460
Prices are before applicable taxes, travel charges, or additional parts.
The repair may cost less when the valve and pump only require cleaning. It may cost more if the dishwasher also needs a drain pump, damaged hose, wiring repair, or control-board work.
Miele Dishwasher Models and Generations
Non-return-valve and drainage problems can affect many Miele dishwasher generations, including:
- G 600 series
- G 800 series
- G 1000 series
- G 2000 series
- G 4000 series
- G 5000 series
- G 6000 series
The general diagnosis may also apply to newer Miele dishwashers, but newer G 7000 models can use a different drain-pump-cover design.
Do not order a valve using only the dishwasher’s appearance or general series number. Always use the complete model and serial number because similar Miele dishwashers may require different non-return valves.
Book a Miele Dishwasher Repair
If your Miele dishwasher displays F11, leaves water inside, or makes an unusual noise while draining, first clean the filter and inspect the non-return valve.
If the problem continues, TrustedFix Appliance Repair can inspect the filters, non-return valve, drain pump, hose, wiring, and control system before recommending a repair.
In most cases, a Miele dishwasher that will not drain is worth repairing. Cleaning the drainage system or replacing the non-return valve is generally much less expensive than purchasing and installing a new premium dishwasher.
