Whirlpool Dryer Not Spinning or Squeaking? Repair Cost

July 17, 2026

Whirlpool dryer opened for service with new drive belt and drum rollers

Your Whirlpool dryer turns on, but the drum does not spin.

Or maybe the drum still turns, but the dryer makes an annoying squeaking, scraping, rumbling, or thumping noise during every load.

Does this mean you need a new dryer?

Usually, no.

Many traditional Whirlpool dryers use a simple mechanical system consisting of a drive belt, drum-support rollers, and an idler pulley. These parts naturally wear with years of use, but they can usually be replaced together using a dryer maintenance kit.

The Issue: The Dryer Is Noisy or the Drum Will Not Turn

Common symptoms of worn dryer components include:

  • The motor runs, but the drum does not turn.
  • The dryer makes a high-pitched squeaking noise.
  • A rumbling or thumping sound comes from inside the cabinet.
  • The dryer makes noise only during the first few minutes.
  • The drum turns slowly or struggles with a normal load.
  • The dryer stops spinning intermittently.
  • Clothes take longer to dry because the drum is not turning properly.
  • A burning-rubber smell is coming from the dryer.

A high-pitched squeal can come from the idler pulley that maintains tension on the drive belt. Worn drum rollers may create rumbling, knocking, or thumping sounds. A broken or badly stretched drive belt can prevent the drum from turning completely.

Stop using the dryer if you smell burning rubber, hear metal scraping, or the drum is difficult to turn. Continuing to operate it may damage the belt, roller shafts, motor, or drum.

How to Diagnose a Whirlpool Dryer That Is Not Spinning

Check the load and dryer settings

Remove all clothing and try running the dryer empty.

An extremely heavy comforter, wet blanket, or overloaded drum can make a weak belt or worn roller problem more noticeable.

Make sure the dryer door closes properly and that a regular timed cycle has been selected.

If the dryer is completely silent, the problem may not be the maintenance kit. A silent dryer may have a failed door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, timer, control board, or power-supply problem.

Listen to the motor

Start the dryer and listen carefully.

If you hear the motor running but the drum remains still, a broken or disconnected belt is a strong possibility.

If the motor only hums and the drum does not turn, a roller or pulley may be seized, or the motor may be struggling to move the drum.

If the dryer starts only after the drum is pushed manually, stop using it. This can indicate a motor or mechanical problem that requires professional diagnosis.

Turn the drum by hand

Disconnect the dryer from power before touching or inspecting the drum.

Open the door and slowly turn the drum by hand.

What you feel may help identify the problem:

  • The drum turns unusually easily: The belt may be broken or disconnected.
  • The drum is difficult to turn: A roller, pulley, bearing, or motor may be seized.
  • The drum turns with a rough or uneven feeling: The rollers or roller shafts may be worn.
  • The drum makes a squeaking sound by hand: The idler pulley or rollers may be dry, damaged, or worn.

This test cannot confirm the exact failed component, but it helps separate a mechanical problem from an electrical starting problem.

Identify the type of noise

Different sounds often point to different components.

High-pitched squeaking or squealing: Often associated with a worn idler pulley or roller.

Rumbling or knocking: Often caused by worn or flat drum rollers.

Repeated thumping: May come from a damaged roller, worn belt, drum seam, or an object caught inside the drum.

Scraping: May indicate worn drum glides, a foreign object, or metal-to-metal contact.

Burning-rubber smell: May indicate that the belt is slipping or a pulley or roller is seized.

Whirlpool advises that worn belts and damaged roller shafts are more complex repairs that may require professional inspection.

The Likely Solution: Replace the Dryer Maintenance Kit

If the belt, rollers, or idler pulley are worn, the recommended solution is often to replace the complete maintenance kit.

A typical Whirlpool dryer maintenance kit may include:

  • Drive belt
  • Drum-support rollers
  • Idler pulley
  • Roller retaining rings
  • Clips and washers

Whirlpool maintenance kit 4392065 is designed for many traditional 29-inch dryers and includes a belt, two support rollers, an idler pulley, retaining rings, and a clip. Whirlpool kit 4392067 is used with many 27-inch dryer designs and includes a belt, four rollers, and an idler pulley. Compatibility must always be confirmed using the complete model number.

During the repair, the technician should also inspect:

  • Roller shafts
  • Motor pulley
  • Drum seals
  • Drum glides
  • Blower wheel
  • Motor condition
  • Lint buildup inside the cabinet
  • Electrical wiring near the motor and heater

If a roller shaft is badly worn, replacing only the roller may not solve the noise. The shaft may also need replacement.

Technician’s Recommendation: Replace the Complete Kit

As an appliance technician, I normally recommend replacing the belt, rollers, and idler pulley together when the dryer is more than approximately three years old and has already been opened for repair.

These parts work together and experience similar wear.

Replacing only the noisy pulley may stop the sound temporarily, but an older belt or roller may fail shortly afterward. The customer may then need to pay again for the dryer to be completely disassembled.

Replacing the maintenance kit during one visit can provide better value because most of the labour is already required to access the internal components.

I usually recommend repairing this problem.

Traditional Whirlpool dryers are generally simple and repairable. A worn belt, pulley, or set of rollers does not mean the heating system, motor, or entire dryer has reached the end of its life.

Most customers approve the repair because purchasing a new dryer can cost two or three times more after adding delivery, installation, removal, and a new vent or power cord.

Whirlpool Dryer Maintenance-Kit Repair Price

The final cost depends on the dryer model, the required maintenance kit, access, and whether additional components are damaged.

Typical TrustedFix pricing may include:

  • Dryer maintenance kit: approximately $70–$140
  • Professional labour: approximately $220–$280
  • Estimated complete repair: approximately $290–$420

Prices are before applicable taxes, travel charges, or additional parts.

The repair may cost more if the dryer also requires roller shafts, motor replacement, damaged wiring, drum glides, or a blower wheel.

Whirlpool Models Commonly Using This Type of Maintenance Kit

The 4392065-style maintenance kit is listed for many traditional Whirlpool dryers, including models such as:

  • WED4815EW1
  • WED4850BW0
  • WED4850HW0
  • WED49STBW1
  • WED5000DW2
  • WGD4815EW2
  • WGD4900XW1
  • WGD4950HW0
  • WED4890XQ0
  • 3LWED4815FW0

Parts listings confirm compatibility for these model families, but not every Whirlpool dryer uses the same kit.

Always confirm the full model number before ordering parts. The model label is usually located around the dryer-door opening or on the rear panel.

Book a Whirlpool Dryer Repair

If your Whirlpool dryer is squeaking, rumbling, thumping, or not spinning, avoid continuing to use it until the cause is identified.

TrustedFix Appliance Repair can inspect the drive belt, drum rollers, idler pulley, roller shafts, motor, blower wheel, and drum supports before recommending a repair.

In many cases, replacing the complete maintenance kit returns the dryer to smooth and quiet operation for much less than the price of a new appliance.
