Your Whirlpool oven turns on, but it takes forever to preheat—or the temperature becomes stuck somewhere between 100°F and 300°F.
You set it to 400°F, wait, and wait again. The display may say that the oven is heating, but your food remains undercooked.
Does this mean you need a new oven?
Usually, no.
In many cases, the problem is a failed bake element. If both the bake and broil functions are not working, the issue may involve the electrical supply, wiring, safety components, temperature sensor, or main control board.
Here is how to safely check the basic symptoms before scheduling a professional repair.
The Issue: The Oven Will Not Reach the Set Temperature
Common symptoms include:
- The oven remains between approximately 100°F and 300°F.
- Preheating takes much longer than normal.
- Food is undercooked on the bottom.
- The top of the food browns, but the centre remains cold.
- Broil works, but Bake does not.
- Neither Bake nor Broil produces heat.
- The oven temperature rises slightly and then stops.
It is normal for bake and broil elements to cycle on and off while the oven regulates its temperature. However, an oven that never approaches the selected temperature has a problem that should be diagnosed. Whirlpool confirms that its heating elements cycle during operation to control temperature, so an element does not need to remain visibly red continuously.
How to Diagnose a Whirlpool Oven That Is Not Heating
Check the settings first
Cancel the current program and start a new regular Bake cycle.
Make sure the oven is not set to:
- Delayed Start
- Control Lock
- Demo Mode
- Keep Warm
- A low-temperature setting
Some Whirlpool ovens can appear to be operating even though a delayed-start or demonstration setting is preventing normal heating. Whirlpool recommends cancelling the function and restarting Bake when checking this problem.
Reset the circuit breaker
Electric ovens and ranges use a high-voltage electrical supply.
One side of the double breaker can sometimes trip while the display, clock, lights, or cooktop still appear to work.
Turn the oven’s breaker completely off, wait approximately one minute, and switch it back on.
If the breaker trips again, stop using the appliance. The oven may have an electrical short, damaged element, wiring problem, or supply issue that requires professional attention.
Whirlpool identifies a tripped breaker, blown fuse, or incorrect electrical supply as possible reasons an electric oven may not heat properly.
Test the Bake function
Set the oven to Bake at approximately 350°F or 400°F.
Allow it several minutes to begin heating. Do not touch the element.
On models with an exposed bake element, look through the door window to see whether the lower element begins glowing red.
Many newer Whirlpool ovens have a hidden bake element under the oven floor, so you may not be able to see it.
Signs of a failed bake element may include:
- No heat from the bottom of the oven
- Visible cracks or burned areas
- Blistering on the element
- Bright sparks before the element stopped working
- Broil working normally while Bake produces little or no heat
If Broil works but Bake does not, the bake element becomes a strong suspect. However, the problem could also involve the element wiring or the bake relay on the control board.
Test the Broil function
Cancel Bake and allow the oven to cool slightly.
Select Broil and close the oven door completely. Depending on the model, the broil element may switch off when the door is open. Whirlpool specifically notes that the door must be properly closed for Broil to operate on many ranges and wall ovens.
Observe the upper element through the door.
If the broil element heats but the oven will not heat properly on Bake, the bake element, wiring, or bake-control circuit likely requires testing.
If neither Bake nor Broil heats, do not automatically order a main board. A technician should first check:
- The incoming voltage
- Circuit breaker
- Thermal fuse or safety thermostat
- Bake and broil elements
- Temperature sensor
- Wiring and connections
- Main control board and relays
Test the bake element for continuity
A visual inspection alone is not always enough. An element may look normal but still be electrically open.
A technician can disconnect power, access the element terminals, and test the element with a multimeter.
A working element should have electrical continuity and an appropriate resistance reading. If the circuit is open, the element has failed and must be replaced.
Testing involves opening a 240-volt appliance. Homeowners should not remove panels or handle wiring unless they are properly trained and the appliance is fully disconnected from power.
The Likely Solution
If the bake element has failed
The repair normally involves:
- Disconnecting electrical power.
- Accessing the bake element and wiring.
- Testing the element for continuity.
- Inspecting the terminals for heat damage.
- Replacing the failed bake element.
- Testing the oven through a complete preheat cycle.
If a terminal or wire burned along with the element, the damaged connection must also be repaired. Installing a new element onto a burned connector can result in another failure.
If Bake and Broil both fail
The technician must determine why neither heating circuit is operating.
The main control board may have a failed relay and may need to be replaced or rebuilt. However, replacing the board without checking the power supply and safety circuits can lead to an expensive misdiagnosis.
Whirlpool’s professional service information recommends using the model-specific wiring diagram when servicing the oven because electrical designs vary between models.
Technician’s Recommendation: Repair or Replace?
If the problem is the bake element, most customers choose to repair the oven.
A bake element is a normal electrical component that can wear out after years of heating and cooling. Its failure does not mean that the entire range or wall oven has reached the end of its life.
Replacing the bake element is often much less expensive than purchasing a new appliance.
For a main control-board failure, the decision is more difficult.
In our experience, approximately half of customers approve a control-board repair. Their decision usually depends on:
- The age and condition of the oven
- The cost and availability of the board
- Whether the appliance has other problems
- Whether it is a range or built-in wall oven
- The cost of buying and installing a replacement
Replacing a built-in wall oven can be especially expensive because the customer may also need delivery, two-person installation, electrical work, removal, or cabinet modifications.
Even an expensive board repair may make financial sense when the existing wall oven fits the cabinetry and is otherwise in good condition.
Whirlpool Oven Repair Prices
Bake-element repair for a freestanding range
- Bake element: approximately $60–$300
- Professional labour: approximately $220–$280
- Estimated total: approximately $280–$580, before taxes and additional work
Bake-element repair for a wall oven
Wall ovens can be heavy and may need to be removed from the cabinet to access the element or wiring.
- Bake element: approximately $60–$300
- Primary technician labour: approximately $220–$280
- Additional technician: approximately $200
- Estimated total: approximately $480–$780
Main control-board repair
- Main control board: approximately $300–$800
- Labour depends on the model and whether the appliance must be removed from the cabinet.
These are general Canadian repair-price ranges. The exact quote depends on the complete model number, part availability, access requirements, and whether wiring or additional components are damaged.
Book a Whirlpool Oven Repair
If your Whirlpool oven is not reaching temperature, test Bake and Broil and reset the breaker. If Broil works but Bake does not, the bake element may have failed.
If neither function works, the oven requires proper electrical testing before an expensive control board is ordered.
TrustedFix Appliance Repair services Whirlpool ranges and wall ovens throughout Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. We can test the elements, electrical supply, temperature sensor, wiring, safety components, and control board before recommending the repair.
Most heating problems do not require replacing the entire oven. A proper diagnosis can help you make the right repair-or-replace decision.
